In December 1968 Apollo 8 was the first spacecraft to escape from the gravitational field of planet Earth.
Then crew orbited the moon ten times over the course of 20 hours, during which they made the famous Christmas eve broadcast, then the most watched TV program ever, and took the first images of the whole earth and the Earthrise seen from the moon.
These days we do not need a spacecraft to take a picture of the earth as a whole – Celestia will do it for us. This is how the Good Old Earth looks tonight, at 18:45 CET.
